The Fighting Irish are on a four-game winning streak, while the Colonels have lost three games this season against Top 10 ranked teams – each by a one score difference. Cathedral upset Center Grove last Friday night, 21-15, led by the Irish defense which recorded eight sacks, blocked two field goal attempts, and forced three fumbles – recovering one in the end zone for a touchdown. It was the Trojans’ first loss of the season. In its last outing, Covington Catholic lost, 31-28, at rival Highlands High School. The Colonels drove 80 yards in 13 plays to score a go-ahead touchdown with 41 seconds to play, only to have the Bluebirds respond with a 75-yard march that resulted in the winning TD with three seconds remaining. Covington Catholic is an all-male school that was founded in 1925, six years after Cathedral opened in 1919, but it did not start playing football until 1967. The Colonels have won eight state championships – most recently claiming the Class 5A title in 2019. They were the Class 4A state runner-up in 2023.
