On the first day of competition of the season, the Richmond Red Devils came hot out of the gate against some of the toughest in the stage at the Valley Kickoff on the Lavern Gibson Champion Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. After a lightning delay and a truncated warmup, the boys team was raring to go. Alex Orihuela was the first of the Richmond boys across the line in 30th place with a time of 17:06. Greyson Farmer and Ethan Miller raced across the line for 120th and 123rd, separated by three seconds. Farmer finished his 5K in 18:36 and Miller finished with a time of 18:39. Xavier Ogle finished in 146th with a time of 19:01. The surprise of the day came from the cross country debut of freshman Cale Newton running a 19:22 for 157th place. The top seven were rounded out by Ethan Newton (20:41) in 203rd and Jack Ferrell (21:02) in 215th. Julian Bowden (21:53) and Bryce Cordova (22:26) also competed but did not place in the top seven for the team. Overall, the boys placed in 23rd out of 39 teams. As the temperature rose through the morning, girls were up next for Richmond. Keena Barker was the first Red Devil to finish, placing 56th with a time of 22:00 flat. Lizzy Graham was not far behind, placing 85th with a time of 22:41. Next up for the girls was Katy Peacock in 149th with a time of 24:39. Allison Stout brought in 172nd with a time of 25:21, and Olivia Bailey wrapped things up in 202nd with a time of 27:32. With only five runners, the girls matched the boys performance of 23rd place for the day. The last of the Devils got to running in the even warmer reserve race. Austin Retter made his cross country debut in 56th place with a time of 22:35. Brady Newton brought in 66th place with a time of 23:25. Owen Griffin debuted in 69th with a time of 23:53. Jackson Gray (25:48) and Titus Moore (26:29) wrapped up the races for Richmond in 74th and 75th. The Red Devil runners return to action in the first of two weekends in a row at Indiana University Easy on Saturday, August 19th at 9:00 AM for the Richmond Invitational.
