The Northfield boys wrestling team turned in a proud and hard fought performance on Saturday at Franklin Community High School, earning an 8th-place finish at the IHSWCA 1A Team State Championships. Competing against some of the strongest small school wrestling programs in Indiana, the Norsemen represented Northfield with determination and heart throughout the day. Northfield opened the event with a strong showing, securing a 48–28 victory over Rossville. The team benefited from key wins across multiple weight classes, including standout performances from Rylan Turner, Cail Dunphy, Kedryk Haecker, Cooper Good, Brayden Rice, Luke Eviston, Elijah Gahl, and Rylan Schultz. The opening dual set a positive tone and reflected the steady improvement the athletes have shown all season. The competition intensified in the following rounds as Northfield faced three highly respected and exceptionally skilled opponents: • Rochester 48–30 over Northfield • Eastside 52–27 over Northfield • Rensselaer Central 44–31 over Northfield Despite the setbacks, Northfield continued to wrestle with resilience and composure. Several Norse athletes delivered victories against top-tier competitors, including strong matches from Rice, Barlow, Eviston, Gahl, Turner, Haecker, Good, and Schultz. Many bouts came down to the closing seconds, showing the team’s willingness to stay focused and give everything they had. “We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to compete at Team State,” Coach Shenefield shared. “Our boys learned a lot, supported one another, and represented Northfield with pride. This experience will only help us grow.” The team extends its thanks to the families, fans, and community members whose encouragement continues to lift the program. Northfield looks forward to carrying these lessons into the remainder of the season. The Norsemen next take on Wes-Del High School on Tuesday, January 13th at home. Northfield will celebrate its seven graduating seniors and will also host Alumni Night, welcoming former athletes back to honor the program’s tradition and history.
