Varsity vs Elwood Community High School (3 - 2) Win Wabash Tennis squeezed back into the win column with a 3-2 win over Elwood. At 1 singles Eli Mattern cruised to a 6-0 first set win. Hitting through the ball and focusing on placement, the first set was a display of many of the skill sets Eli brings to the table. In the second set with Mattern leading 4-1, Cannon saw an opening and capitalized on a lack of focus to get the set score to 5-4 Mattern. Mattern composed himself and closed the set easily with a love game to win the match 6-0, 6-4. Cooper Long at 2 singles had a mirror image match as the 1 singles. Long, utilizing his shotmaking ability and superior placement completed set 1 in short order with a 6-0 game score. Set two Long started a bit slow leading to some tentative play where Long found himself down 4-1. Leaning on his experience and skill set, Cooper was able to turn things back in his favor and gain a second point for Wabash by winning 7-5. Wabash's 3 singles match was a quick and decisive win for Senior, Ashton Coffman. Coffman has transitioned smoothly to the singles game this year after three years in the doubles world. Ashton plays to the strength of his game, hustle and keeping the ball in play to win the match 6-0, 6-0. The 1 doubles combo for the evening competed very well in set 1. Clay Shepler and Karson McKenzie fought their way to a game score of 6-6 before succumbing in a tie breaker 7-2. The letdown of the first set loss was evident at the boys went on to lost set 2 0-6. At two doubles, Dillon Pence and TJ Tracy battled through a roller coaster match but were unable to seal the win. Losing set 1 by a game score of 1-6, the Wabash duo played a strong second set to bounce back with a 6-4 score to even the match. In lieu of a full 3rd set, both teams agreed to play a 10 point tie break. Matching each other point for point, Pence and Tracy ultimately fell 8-10 to lose the match. Wabash improved their team record to 4-9 and remains 1-2 in conference play.
