Wabash Athletic Hall of Fame - CLASS OF 2024

The following is the Wabash High School Athletic Hall of Fame class for 2024. This year's class will be inducted on January 12th in between games when the Boys Basketball teams face Manchester at Coolman Gymnasium. Hall of Fame Class of 2024 Thomas “Stew” Butler (1921) Chris Keefer (2004) Kaleigh Hensley (2011) ’36-37 Varsity Boys Basketball ‘77-78 Varsity Boys Cross Country Thomas “Stew” Butler Thomas was a member of the Wabash High School Class of 1921. During High School Thomas was a three year letterman in Football and Track. Thomas helped lead Wabash to a runner-up finish in the State Track meet his junior year as he won the state title in the Shot Put with a throw of 43’7.5”. He would finish second in the state in the Shot Put his senior year. Thomas was selected 1st Team All-State in Football as a senior at Center after a year that would see the Apaches finish undefeated and be widely considered as the mythical state champs. Thomas would continue his athletic career at Indiana University as a member of the Football team. Thomas was picked as a captain of the IU team his junior year and was selected team MVP his senior year. Thomas passed away in May of 1985. Chris Keefer Chris was a member of the Wabash High School Class of 2004. During High School Chris was a four year letter winner in Basketball and also participated in Tennis and Track. Chris was selected Honorable Mention All-CIC in basketball and tennis as a sophomore and 1st Team All-CIC in basketball as a junior and senior. Chris was also selected to the All Wabash County Tourney Basketball team both his junior and senior years and was the tournament MVP as a senior as the Apaches won the title. Chris graduated as the Apaches all time leading rebounder, now second, as is also in the top ten in career assists and steals. Chris and his wife Allyson currently reside in Wabash. Kaleigh Hensley Kaleigh was a member of the Wabash High School Class of 2011. During High School Kaleigh participated in Volleyball, Golf, Basketball, Tennis and Track, earning 19 letters. Kaleigh was 1st team All-TRC in Basketball three times, and in Volleyball once. Kaleigh was selected 1st Team all-state in Basketball as a senior. Kaleigh is still the Wabash all-time leading scorer in Basketball with 1908 points, which is also the most in Wabash County history. Kaleigh is the 88th leading scorer in the history of Girls Basketball in Indiana. Kaleigh also holds the school record for points in a season as well as steals in a season and career. Kaleigh was on Lady Apache basketball teams that won 4 County Tourney titles, 2 TRC championships and 3 Sectional titles while winning 79 games in 4 years. Kaleigh continued her basketball career at the University of St. Francis where she was a member of the 2016 National Championship team. Kaleigh currently resides in St. Joseph Michigan. ‘36-37 Boys Basketball Team The 1936-37 Varsity Boys Basketball team led by Wabash High School Hall of Fame coach Dutch Struck won a school record 24 games as they won Sectional and Regional championships. The Apaches beat Marion and Kokomo to win the Regional before falling to Warsaw in the Semi-State. The 24 wins is still a record for Boys Basketball at Wabash. The Apache squad was led by Wabash Hall of Fame members Edward and Richard Yarnelle. The Semi-State loss would be the last game for Coach Struck who moved on to be the Basketball Coach and AD at Hanover College. ‘77-78 Boys Cross Country Team The 1977-78 Varsity Boys Cross Country team led by Wabash High School Hall of Fame coach Dennis Horn finished 6th in the state Cross Country Meet. The Apaches cruised to the CIC championship with Phil Treckman, Tim Mylin and Larry Boone finishing 1,2,3. Wabash ended the regular season 15-0 in dual meets and then would go on to finish 2nd in the Sectional, 4th in the Regional and a school best 6th in the State Meet. At the state meet Wabash HS Hall of Famers Tim Mylin and Phil Treckman would make All-State and Mylin would be selected as the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award recipient.
