Wabash Tennis opened the season with an 0-5 to a very good Madison Grant team. MG returning 5 players from last year's sectional championship team started strong against the eager but inexperienced Apaches. In a match the actually began on Thursday, that was then picked up on Friday due to a weather squall bringing in some torrential rains, the Apaches showed growth from last year and promise moving forward this season. Grant Ford, playing at 1 singles in his HS debut for Wabash Tennis showed some nerves early on, but then settled in a played a nice match losing to a strong ball striker, Luke Gilman 0-6, 3-6. Eli Mattern recovered from a slow start both days to play a very tightly contested match at 2 singles. Ultimately, Christopher Fox outlasted Mattern winning 6-2,7-5. The 3 singles match was a dominant win for Clayton Hull of MG 0-6, 0-6. 1 doubles was a back and forth match, with Madison grant taking set one 7-5 over Cooper Long and Alex Dinkins. Long and Dinkins put together an excellent 2nd set however, winning 6-3 to even the match at 1 set a piece. Playing a 3rd set tiebreak, Gibson and Cox of MG found the right shots to prevail 10-6 to close out the match. MG also had a dominant win at 2 doubles where Spencer Stout and Ashton Coffman lost in straight sets 1-6, 1-6. Coach Mattern shared: "Although this goes down as an 0-5 loss, we had some bright spots and were competitive in 3 of the matches against a veteran team with proven success. It was a good first match for us heading into this weekend's Freemont Invite and beyond. We saw some things at each position we can improve and build upon, working our way toward being a very good team. Wabash is 0-1 on the season and heads to Freemont HS for a 4 team invite on Saturday.
