Bears Win Pool at Gateway Classic The Ursuline Varsity Field Hockey team put together an impressive day at the Gateway Classic, finishing pool play unbeaten and earning the title of Pool Champions. The Bears opened the tournament against Assumption in a hard-fought defensive battle that ended in a 0-0 tie. Ursuline generated plenty of offensive opportunities, including several penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage. Lexi Nichol was strong in goal and recorded the shutout to help the Bears earn the draw. Ursuline’s offense came alive in its second game, rolling to an 8-0 victory over Antioch. Nichol traded her goalie pads for an attacking role and delivered four goals for the Bears. Hadley Hockenberry added three goals, while Lulu Pittillo scored once to complete the Ursuline attack. The Bears also shared the ball well throughout the game, with assists coming from Sloane Seago, Lucie Naeger, Regan Brillhart, Hadley Hockenberry, Lexi Nichol, Audrey DeHaven and Madi Kornfeld. Libby Phillips protected the cage and recorded the shutout. Ursuline closed pool play with another strong performance, defeating Holland Hall 3-1. Hockenberry and Nichol provided the scoring for the Bears, while Naeger, Maura Murphy and DeHaven contributed assists. Ursuline also received strong work in goal from Nichol, Erin Mehan and Reagan Boresi as the Bears recorded their third consecutive shutout of the tournament. Across three games, Ursuline outscored its opponents 11-0 and did not surrender a single goal. The Bears finished pool play with two wins, one tie and three shutouts, earning the Gateway Classic Pool Championship. It was a complete team effort built on defense, offensive pressure, unselfish play and contributions throughout the roster.
