Cross Country Season Starts at Valley Cross Kickoff The Red Devils traveled across the state Saturday to Terre Haute to compete in the Valley Cross Kickoff, marking the start of the fall competition season. The competition field included many of the best teams in the state as those teams looked to preview the IHSAA State Finals course. The girls team ran first, with five runners making the race for the Red Devils. Keena Barker was the first Richmond racer to finish with a time of 23:25 for 112th place. Katy Peacock came across in 181st with a time of 25:38. Lena Allen returned to the course with a time of 27:11 for 217th place. The freshmen finished out the race for the Red Devils with Lauren Newton (29:00) in 244th and Kemaira Farris-Craig (29:22) in 246th. The girls’ combined score of an even 1000 points put them in 37th place. The boys team raced into action next. The first finisher for the Red Devils was sophomore Cale Newton with a time of 18:05 for 84th place. Julian Bowden finished next at 18:48 for a score of 120. Xavier Ogle started his senior season with a time of 19:37 to earn 166th place. Brady Newton finished just a second shy of his personal-best race with a time of 20:24 for 194th. Austin Retter was the last Red Devil to score with a time of 21:11 for 208th. The boys finished in 30th place with a grand total score of 772. Finishing out the race for the Devils were Brayden Villafuerte (21:27), Jackson Gray (25:38), Titus Moore (25:59), and Aiden Merkamp (28:42). The Red Devils return to action next Saturday at their home course at IU East for the Richmond Invitational. The girls race kicks off at 9:00 AM with the boys and middle school races to follow.
