Cathedral Defeats Trotwood-Madison in Closing Seconds

Cathedral took just one minute and 15 seconds to drive 79 yards in 11 plays Friday night and score the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds to defeat Trotwood-Madison, 32-28, on homecoming at the University of Indianapolis. The Fighting Irish have now won their last thee outings to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Rams, from the Dayton, Ohio area, are also 4-2 after a second consecutive loss. Cathedral took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Cam Koers completed a pass on the visitor’s sideline to Adam Ayers who carried it 67 yards into the end zone. After Cathedral recovered the ensuing onside kick, Xavier Dangerfield ran 44 yards for a touchdown. Landon Hughes rushed for the two-point conversion which increased the lead to 15-0. Van Krisiloff kicked a 26-yard field goal in the second period. In doing so, Krisiloff broke the school record for most attempted field goals in a career with 38. Before halftime, Trotwood-Madison quarterback Dallas Shehee ran 10 yards for a TD, making the score 18-6 at the break. Neither team scored in the third period, which set up a wild final quarter. Dangerfield’s 32-yard scoring run put he Irish ahead 25-6 with 11:15 remaining. Two minutes later, Shehee connected with Armani Rogers for a 53-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion trimmed Cathedral’s lead to 25-14. On their next drive, Shehee tossed a 32-yard scoring pass to Rogers, pulling the Rams to within five points after a failed two-point conversion attempt. Mike Keith then intercepted a Koers’ pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to give Trotwood-Madison its first lead of the night, 28-25, following Shehee’s two-point conversion pass to Rogers. In total, the Rams scored 22 unanswered points in less than six minutes. On its next possession, Cathedral turned the ball over on downs at its own 23-yard line with 2:31 to play. However, the Fighting Irish defense kept Trotwood-Madison from getting a first down, forcing an incomplete fourth-down pass to give the ball back to the offense with 1:31 left at the home 21-yard line. Consecutive third-down completions by Koers to Ayers for 35 yards and Nate Van Vierzen for 21 yards moved the ball to the Rams’ 23-yard line. Another pass to Connor O’Brien gained 15 to the 8-yard line. On third and goal, Koers tossed a short pass to Ayers who then carried a tackler across the goal line for the game winning score with 16 seconds remaining. Koers completed 25 of 39 passes for 268 yards. Ayers caught five passes for 116 yards. Dangerfield gained 177 yards on 27 rushing attempts. For Trotwood-Madison, Shehee completed 16 of 34 passes for 285 yards and Rogers had eight receptions for 183 yards. Class 5A third-rated Cathedral will travel to Class 6A second-ranked and undefeated Center Grove this Friday. The Fighting Irish defeated the Trojans 49-45 last season.
