athedral scored 37 first-quarter points in high school football at Southport Friday night on the way to a 54-0 victory over the host Cardinals in the first meeting between the two schools since 1955. The Irish offense scored on four one-play drives, while the defense shut out its second opponent this season. On the first play of the game, running back Xavier Dangerfield caught a Cam Koers’ pass on the home sideline and raced 65 yards to put the Fighting Irish ahead 6-0. After the defense forced a safety, Jimmy Pappas scored on a 1-yard run and Landon Hughes rushed for the two-point conversion to increase the margin to 16-0. Before the end of the first period, Ryan Freije returned an interception 56 yards for Cathedral’s first defensive TD of the season, Koers tossed a 7-yard scoring pass to Hughes, and Dangerfield added a 44-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Pappas ran 51 yards for a score and Van Krisiloff kicked a 36-yard field goal. The 47-0 halftime score triggered a running clock for the entire second half under the IHSAA’s Mercy Rule. Freshman running back Cam Berry scampered 85 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to complete the scoring. Koers completed all six of his passes for 107 yards. In doing so, he became the 14th Irish player in school history to pass for more than 2,000 career yards. Dangerfield rushed for 95 yards on only three attempts, while Pappas gained 75 yards on five carries. The Irish defense held the Cardinals to negative 24 yards rushing and 71 total yards. The Fighting Irish improve their record to 3-2, while the Cardinals fall to 0-5 this season. Cathedral hosts Trotwood-Madison from the Dayton, Ohio area next week at the University of Indianapolis. The Rams are 4-1 following a 31-20 home loss Friday to Indiana Class 6A second-ranked Center Grove.
