Class 6A sixth-rated Cathedral lost at number five Warren Central Friday night, 34-28, to conclude the high school football regular season. The Warriors converted three Irish turnovers into touchdowns as they improved to 8-1 this year – Warren’s most regular season victories since 2018. The Fighting Irish drop to 5-3 heading into the post-season. Cathedral’s Jack Lockhart intercepted an Anthony Dennison first-quarter pass and returned it 70 yards for a score to put the Fighting Irish ahead 7-0. Devaughn Slaughter then caught a Cam Koers’ second-quarter screen pass and raced 60 yards for an Irish touchdown. Warren Central recovered a Cathedral fumble at the 5-yard line with two minutes remaining in the first half. Two plays later, Marcus Bell’s 2-yard TD run cut the deficit to 14-7 at the intermission. In the third quarter, Cathedral’s Van Krisiloff kicked a career-long 46-yard field goal. The Warriors pulled to within three points when Dennison threw a 29-yard scoring pass to Airic Hester. Early in the fourth period, Krisiloff kicked a 24-yard field goal making the score 20-14. Armonte Jackson intercepted a Koers’ pass and returned it to the 8-yard line, setting up Bell’s 4-yard touchdown run which put the Warriors ahead 21-20. Two minutes later, the Irish reclaimed the lead, 26-21, on Koers’ 38-yard touchdown pass to Albren Johnson. Warren Central responded with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Bell forcing his way into the end zone from five yards away and the Warriors back on top 27-26. Madden Beriault’s interception and 39-yard return to the Irish 4-yard line led to Dennison’s 1-yard sneak for a TD with less than a minute to play. Cathedral marched 52 yards in eight plays, but the Fighting Irish could not score on 4th and one at Warren’s 3-yard line in the closing seconds. Dennison took a safety on the game’s final play to run the clock out. Koers completed 13 of 28 passes for 179 yards, while Dennison was 13 of 29 for 212 yards. Jimmy Pappas led the Irish on the ground with 70 rushing yards on 13 attempts. Slaughter had five receptions for 92 yards. Warren Central now leads the all-time series against Cathedral 11-9. The state tournament begins next Friday, but all teams competing in Class 6A have a first-round bye. The Fighting Irish will open the post-season against winless Indianapolis North Central in the sectional semifinal round on Friday, November 1. The Irish defeated the Panthers earlier this season 53-13.
