Cathedral defeated rival Roncalli in high school football Friday night, 35-6, at Butler University’s Sellick Bowl to keep the Victory Bell traveling trophy up on the Hill where it has been since 2007. Cathedral has now won its last 14 outings against the Royals to lead the all-time series between the two schools, 24-12, with no future regular season games scheduled. Roncalli returned the opening kickoff to its own 23-yard line. The Irish defense stopped Royals’ quarterback Collin Ash 17 plays, and nearly eight-and-a-half minutes later, on a fourth-and-goal sneak attempt from the 1-yard line. On its first possession, Cathedral quarterback Cameron Koers threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to Albren Johnson to compete a 4-play, 99-yard drive. Devaughn Slaughter’s successful end around two-point conversion run made the score 8-0. In the second quarter, Jack Lockhart blocked a Royals’ punt, which Aiden Flournoy scooped up and ran 30 yards for an Irish touchdown. Before the half ended, Van Krisiloff kicked a 33-yard field goal. Krisiloff added a 42-yard field goal midway through the third period to increase Cathedral’s lead to 20-0. On the second play of the fourth quarter, Koers tossed a 38-yard scoring pass to Amari Moore. Aidan Hughes then sacked Ash on Roncalli’s next possession and forced a fumble that the Fighting Irish recovered at the Royals’ 2-yard line. Xavier Dangerfield scored a rushing TD on the next play. Landon Hughes sneaked over the goal line for the two-point conversion, boosting the lead to 35 points and triggering the IHSAA Mercy Rule and a running clock for the final ten minutes and 22 seconds. Zach Dozier’s 3-yard touchdown run for Roncalli concluded the scoring with less than three minutes remaining. For the game, Koers completed 7 of 17 passes for 185 yards. Johnson caught 2 passes for 103 yards, making it the first game of his career with more than 100 receiving yards. Cathedral has now won four consecutive games to improve its record to 5-2. The Irish travel Warren Central next Friday for the final game of the regular season. The Warriors have a 7-1 record. It’s the first time since 2014 that the two schools, located less than 10 miles apart, have played. Warren leads the all-time series with the Irish 10-9.
