Cathedral’s Van Krisloff kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:17 remaining to give the Irish a 31-28 lead at Cincinnati St. Xavier Friday night, but the Bombers then drove 65 yards and scored on Chase Herbstreit’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Cam Taylor with 18 seconds left for a thrilling 35-31 victory. Neither team led by more than seven points as they combined to tally more than 800 yards of total offense. St. X began the scoring late in the opening quarter on Herbstreit’s 8-yard run, only to have Cathedral answer when Cameron Koers tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to Devaughn Slaughter early in the second quarter. Sophomore running back Xavier Dangerfield gave the Irish a 14-7 advantage midway through the period on a 36-yard TD run up the middle. The Bombers responded with Herbstreit throwing a 12-yard score-tying touchdown pass to Matt Hoerst. St. Xavier received the second half kickoff and regained the lead, 21-14, when Herbstreit connected with Taylor on a 20-yard TD pass. On the ensuing Irish possession, Dangerfield scored again on a 22-yard run between the tackles. Just 40 seconds into the final period, Koers’ 27-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Harvey put Cathedral ahead, 28-21, but Herbstreit tied the game again on a 4-yard run which set up the final dramatic moments. Dangerfield rushed for 141 yards on 25 attempts. Koers completed 14 of 21 passes for 168 yards. Harvey caught five passes for 78 yards and teammate Owen Peterson had five receptions for 54 yards. Herbstreit connected on 19 of 31 attempts for 263 yards, while Taylor gained 149 yards on 12 catches. Cathedral falls to 1-2 on the season heading into Friday’s rivalry clash at Bishop Chatard. The Trojans are undefeated following a Circle City Conference, 9-3, week-three victory at Roncalli. Chatard defeated Cathedral last year, 24-21, in a game that was suspended at halftime due to a lighting malfunction at Arlington Middle School, forcing the teams to finish the following morning at Chatard’s Alumni Field. The meeting will be the 50th between the two schools since the Irish and Trojans first played in 1970. Cathedral leads the series 29-20, having won eight of its last ten matchups with Chatard.
