Seventh-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral opened the 2024 high school football season Friday night with a 24-6 upset win on the road against top-rated and reigning Class 6A state champion Ben Davis. The Fighting Irish victory broke a 15-game losing streak against the Giants that began in 1988. Cathedral’s Van Krisiloff kicked a career-long 40-yard field goal late in the first quarter to give the Irish an early 3-0 lead. In the second quarter, Fighting Irish quarterback Cameron Koers finished a 12-play, 80-yard drive by tossing a 26-yard touchdown pass to Devaughn Slaughter. On second and goal from the Cathedral 2-yard line, Irish linebacker Kyle Harden scooped up a fumbled Ben Davis center snap and returned the ball 88 yards for a score with just 44 seconds remaining in the first half, making the score 17-0 at the intermission. Krisiloff’s squib kick to start the second half bounced off a Giant player and the Fighting Irish recovered the loose ball at their own 42-yard line. Five plays later, Jalen Bonds scored on a 17-yard run. Notre Dame recruit Mark Zachery intercepted a tipped Koers’ pass on the goal line in the fourth quarter and returned it 100 yards for the Giants’ only points of the game. Bonds led the Cathedral offense with 162 yards rushing on 25 attempts. In his first varsity start, Koers completed nine of 17 passes for 76 yards with six of the completions going to Slaughter. The Irish defense forced three Ben Davis turnovers and held the Giants to just 52 yards rushing. Cathedral hosts Brownsburg next Friday at Marian University. The Irish lost to the Bulldogs, 45-31, in 2023. Third-rated Brownsburg opened its season Friday with a 45-13 home win over Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger.
