Indianapolis Cathedral finished the high school football season Friday night with a 38-16 victory over Akron Archbishop Hoban at the University of Indianapolis. Senior Xavier Dangerfield rushed for more than 100 yards and scored three touchdowns, while the Irish defense forced three turnovers on the way to a third consecutive Fighting Irish win. Hoban started the game with an 11-play, nearly nine minute, 60-yd drive to Cathedral’s 20-yard line, but the Knights missed a 37-yard field goal attempt. On the next play, Dangerfield ran 80 yards up the middle for an Irish touchdown. Knights’ quarterback Major Cribbs answered with a 1-yard scoring run early in the second period. Jeremy Hammel’s extra point kick gave Hoban a 7-6 lead with 11:15 remaining in the first half. At that point, the Knights had run 23 offensive plays to just one for the Irish. D angerfield scored his second touchdown on a 6-yard run on the next Cathedral possession, but the Irish point after attempt failed for a second time making the score 12-7. A snap over punter Emmett Knowles’ head resulted in a Hoban safety, so the halftime score was 12-9 in Cathedral’s favor. Dangerfield returned the second half opening kickoff 86 yards for an Irish touchdown. Four plays after a Cathedral fumble recovery at the Hoban 47-yard line, Ollie Lewis added to the lead when he took a Luke Finn push pass around the end for an 8-yard TD. Rohan Fahey’s second point-after kick increased the margin to 26-9. Cribbs scored his second touchdown on a 16-yard run late in the third period. The Fighting Irish added touchdown runs of 55 yards by Knowles and nine yards by Tell’i McCullough in the fourth quarter to ensure the win. The Class 5A top-rated Fighting Irish conclude the regular season with a 6-3 record. Cathedral has a first-round tournament bye and will open the post-season on October 30th at the winner of the next Friday’s game between Greenfield-Central and Mount Vernon.
