A balanced Cathedral offense scored in the first and last minute of Friday night’s homecoming football game against Covington Catholic to earn a 28-20 victory at Butler University. Irish senior running back Xavier Dangerfield rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns. In doing so, Dangerfield moved into tenth place on the school’s all-time rushing list with 2,335 career yards. Cathedral grabbed a 7-0 lead on the second play of the game when Luke Finn connected with Patrick Ayers for a 78-yard touchdown pass. Covington Catholic answered with a 72-yard, 14-play drive that consumed more than seven-and-a-half minutes. Kiyan Miller rushed 10 times for the Colonels ending the possession with a 2-yard scoring run that tied the game. The Fighting Irish regained the lead when Tell’i McCullough capped an 11-play, 73-yard march with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first minute of the second quarter. The point after attempt failed leaving the score at 13-7. The Colonels executed another methodical drive, 15 plays and 79 yards, that took more than eight-and-half minutes. Miller’s second rushing TD, this one from four yards away, and the extra point kick gave Cov Cath a 14-13 halftime lead. The Colonels possessed the ball for 17 minutes in the first half, while the Irish had it for just seven minutes. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Cathedral regained the lead three minutes into the fourth period on Dangerfield’s 1-yard rushing touchdown. Evan Johnson caught Emmett Knowles’ two-point conversion pass to make the score 21-14. Miller then led Covington Catholic on a third sustained drive that lasted more than six minutes and covered 60 yards in eleven plays. His eighth rushing attempt during the possession was a 1-yard scoring run, but the point after attempt failed keeping the Irish ahead 21-20 with two-and-a-half minutes remaining. The Colonels recovered the ensuing onside kick at the Irish 49-yard line, but Cathedral’s defense held on fourth down at the 40. On the next play, Dangerfield burst through the middle for a 60-yard touchdown with 38 seconds left. James Groepper intercepted a pass on the final play of the night to secure the victory. Cathedral gained 362 yards on offense – 210 through the air and 152 on the ground. Finn completed all seven of his passes for 115 yards, while Ayers caught three passes for 101 yards. Miller had 36 rushing attempts for 159 yards for Covington Catholic. Caden Nelson was involved in 22 tackles to lead the Irish defense – six solos and 16 assists. The Fighting Irish improve to 5-3 this season, while the Colonels fall to 4-4. Cathedral ends the regular season Friday at the University of Indianapolis against Akron Archbishop Hoban. Four of the Knights’ five losses have been against schools rated in last week’s High School Football America Top 300 national rankings.
