Cathedral lost in overtime, 17-10, Friday night to Trotwood-Madison in a defensive struggle outside of Dayton, Ohio. Each offense gained less than 30 yards rushing on more than 30 attempts, while each defense forced three turnovers as the Rams won their fifth consecutive game. Following a scoreless first quarter, Trotwood-Madison’s defense recorded a safety at the beginning of the second period when the Irish center snap bounced into the end zone and punter Emmett Knowles kicked it out of play to minimize the risk of the Rams recovering it. On their final possession of the first half, the Fighting Irish moved the ball 37 yards in seven plays, to set up Rohan Fahey’s 32-yard field goal, making the score 3-2 at the intermission. Early in the second half, Cathedral’s Parker Scott intercepted a Jayden McClain pass and returned it to the Trotwood-Madison 7-yard line. On third and goal from the one, Luke Finn ran around the right end and dove across the goal line to put the Irish ahead 10-2 with Fahey’s point-after kick. The Rams started their game-tying drive late in the final quarter at the Irish 41-yard line. Eight plays later, Daylen Dennis scored on a two-yard run, after which McClain ran for the two-point conversion to tie the game. Cathedral moved into field goal range, but Fahey’s 29-yard attempt as time expired sailed wide to send the contest to overtime. Trotwood-Madison began the OT on offense at the 20-yard line per Ohio high school rules. Dennis scored on a fourth and goal run from the 1-yard line. Finn was then intercepted in the end zone by the Rams on fourth down and ten to conclude the game. The Fighting Irish are now 3-3 this season, while Trotwood Madison improves to 5-1. Cathedral faces Crispus Attucks next Friday at Broad Ripple Middle School in the first meeting between the two schools since 1980. The Tigers are 2-4 this season following a 22-13 win at Southport.
