Friday’s battle for the Northside Knights of Columbus traveling trophy at Bishop Chatard came down to the final play of the game with Indianapolis Cathedral prevailing, 16-14, in a thrilling high school football rivalry game. The Irish received the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards in six minutes before Rohan Fahey kicked a 36-yard field goal. Chatard responded with a more than seven-minute drive that covered 79 yards to the Irish 1-yard line. On fourth and goal, Cathedral’s defense stopped Jax Guidry’s rushing attempt for a 1-yard loss. Quarterback Luke Finn then led the Fighting Irish down the field 98 yards, completing five of six of passes for 66 yards, including a 13-yard scoring strike to Ollie Lewis. Fahey kicked a 23-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half to make the Irish lead 13-0 at the intermission. Chatard stormed back in the third quarter beginning with Guidry’s 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Noah Stornetta intercepted an Emmett Knowles pass on the ensuing Cathedral drive and returned it 37 yards to the Irish 45-yard line. Six plays later, Chatard took the lead, 14-13, when Harrison Odom tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Haines. Cathedral responded with a 10-play drive that concluded with Fahey kicking a career-long 40-yard field goal on the final play of the third period. Trailing 16-14, the Trojans embarked on a nearly 8-minute, 68-yard drive which ended when Scout Bushong forced a Guidry fumble that Austin Neal recovered at the Irish 12-yard line. Chatard forced a Knowles’ 43-yard punt that put the ball at the Trojans’ 25-yard line with 1:16 remaining. Odom completed five of seven passes to move the ball to the Irish 19-yard line, assisted by 27 Cathedral penalty yards, setting up Brady Langlois’ first field goal attempt of the season with six seconds to play. Momentarily, it appeared as if the Trojans had won the game when Langlois’ 36-yard kick split the uprights, but the Irish were called for an offside penalty which negated the play. Following a Cathedral timeout, his 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right as time expired, giving the Irish the win and the Trojans their first loss of the year. Xavier Dangerfield gained 101 yards on 22 rushing attempts to become the 12th player in school history to rush for more than 2,000 career yards. Tell’i McCullough added 98 yards on 13 runs for the Irish who had 360 yards of total offense including 240 on the ground. Finn completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards. Guidry ran 26 times for 130 yards to lead the Chatard offense. The Fighting Irish have won three straight games against the Trojans and eight of the last ten meetings. Cathedral, now 2-2, travels to Southport on Friday. The Cardinals are also 2-2 after victories over Arsenal Tech and Terre Haute North in their last two outings. Last season at Southport, Cathedral scored 37 points in the first quarter on its way to a 54-0 victory.
