Indianapolis Cathedral never trailed Friday night at Cincinnati St. Xavier High School on the way to earning its first football win of the season 30-21. It’s only the second Irish victory against the Bombers at St. X in 12 tries, and the first since the year 2000. On its first possession, Cathedral drove 78 yards in 10 plays with Xavier Dangerfield scoring on a 5-yard run to put the Irish ahead 7-0. St. Xavier answered early in the second quarter when Aiden Newdigate tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Logan Von Holle. Rowan Fahey’s 23-yard field goal gave Cathedral a 10-7 halftime lead. The Fighting Irish received the second half kickoff and marched 80 yards in 12 plays, scoring on Emmett Knowles’ 3-yard run. St. X responded with an 80-yard drive of its own, cutting the margin to 17-14 on Newdigate’s 1-yard TD run. Early in the fourth quarter, Knowles threw a 28-yard scoring pass to Evan Johnson, making the score 23-14 after a two-point conversion pass failed. On their next possession, the Bombers pulled to within two points, 23-21, on Newdigate’s 13-yard touchdown scamper. However, the Irish followed with their third 80-yard scoring drove of the half. Luke Finn’s 63-yard pass to Patrick Ayers set up Tell’i McCullough’s 1-yard touchdown run two plays later. James Groeper’s second interception of Newdigate came with two minutes remaining to end the Bombers’ final drive at the Irish 20-yard line. Dangerfield led the Irish rushing attack with 130 yards on 23 attempts. It’s the third straight game against St. X that he has rushed for more than 100 yards. Finn completed all six of his passes for 135 yards, while Knowles was five of eight for 92 passing yards. Johnson caught six passes for 131 yards – his second consecutive outing with more than 100 yards receiving. Newdigate threw for 133 yards and rushed for another 100, but after not being sacked in the two previous games, the Cathedral defense tackled him in the backfield four times. Caden Nelson had 14 tackles for the Irish. Cathedral and St. Xavier are both 1-2 heading into week four of the season. The Fighting Irish travel to rival Bishop Chatard Friday. The Trojans are 3-0 with wins over top 10 ranked teams Lafayette Jeff, Leo, and Roncalli. Cathedral defeated Bishop Chatard last season, 23-20, and holds a 31-20 advantage in the all-time series which began in 1970.
