Cathedral played Roncalli Friday night in high school football for the first time since 2010 and the Fighting Irish ran to a 42-0 victory on a windy night on the south side of Indianapolis. It was the second consecutive game that the Irish rushed for more than 300 yards, while holding their opponent to less 40 yards on the ground. The win keeps the Victory Bell traveling trophy up on the Hill at Cathedral where it has been since 2007. Irish quarterback Danny O’Neil started the scoring, more than halfway through the opening quarter, with a 7-yard touchdown run. Two minutes later, Kyle Braun blocked a Roncalli punt in the Royals’ end zone, which Hosia Smith recovered for Cathedral’s third special teams TD of the season. In the second quarter, O’Neil sneaked across the goal line from a yard out, then threw a 27-yard scoring pass to Devaughn Slaughter, making the halftime score 28-0. Another O’Neil QB sneak for a touchdown midway through the third quarter boosted the lead to 35 points, triggering the IHSAA Mercy Rule and a running clock for the final 18 minutes of the contest. Jimmy Pappas concluded the scoring in the fourth quarter when he ran the ball all six times on a 56-yard drive and finished with a 5-yard touchdown run. Cathedral’s Jalen Bonds rushed for 141 yards on 19 attempts. Bonds has run for more than 100 yards in each of the last three games. The Fighting Irish defense limited the Royals to just 87 yards of total offense, 32 yards rushing and 55 yards passing. Braun and Aidan Chase each had interceptions that the Irish offense converted into touchdowns. Cathedral has now won its last 13 outings against Roncalli to lead the all-time series 23-12. With their fourth consecutive win, the Irish improve to 6-2 on the season. The Royals fall to 3-5 following their third straight loss. Roncalli hosts Class 4A top-rated and defending state champion East Central to conclude the regular season next Friday. Cathedral plays Class 6A top-ranked and reigning state champion Center Grove next at Butler University. The Irish split a pair of games with the Trojans last season, winning the regular season matchup 40-29, but losing in the semi-state round of the tournament 33-10. Center Grove is 7-1 after dropping its season opener against Ohio’s Lakewood St. Edward. The Eagles were ranked 17th in the nation last week by High School Football America. Center Grove was ranked 22nd in the HSFA Top 300 national poll.
