Cathedral and Roncalli renew a rivalry tonight that dates back to their first meeting in 1969. The Irish and the Royals have not played in the regular season since 2010, but the schools have met five times since then in the tournament – most recently in 2018. The Fighting Irish have won their last three games and enter tonight with a 5-2 record. Last week, Jalen Bonds and Danny O’Neil each rushed for 166 yards in a 39-26 victory at Cincinnati la Salle. O’Neil scored touchdowns on the ground and threw for three more scores. Roncalli has a 3-4 record following a 43- 0 loss last Friday at Louisville Male, which is the top-rated Class 6A team in Kentucky. Cathedral leads the all-time series 22-12. Of the previous 34 meetings between the two schools, 18 have come in the IHSAA state tournament with the Irish holding an 11-7 postseason advantage. Tonight’s victor will possess the Victory Bell for the next year. The bell was first awarded by the downtown Knights of Columbus in 1945 as a traveling trophy annually honoring the winner between Cathedral and Sacred Heart High Schools.
