It’s the first time that the Irish have played the Ramblers. Both teams are nationally ranked by High School Football America. Cathedral is rated #230, while Loyola is #257 in this week’s HSFA Top 300. The Fighting Irish lost their season-opening game last Friday at Ben Davis. Cathedral fell behind 27-10 in the second half, but the Irish came back to tie the game a 27 all before losing 33-27. Senior running back Xavier Dangerfield rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown. Loyola Academy, located in Wilmette, Illinois on Chicago’s North Shore, defeated Warren Township 31-0 to open its season. Junior running backs Carmello Meldonado and Jayden Garrett both rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown, while receiver Jordan McKinley, also a junior, caught six passes for 132 yards and two scores. The Ramblers posted a 4-5 record in 2025 after claiming the Illinois 8A (largest class) state title in each of the previous three seasons. The Fighting Irish are 4-0 all-time against Illinois teams with wins over Highland Park (1984), Nequa Valley (2009), East St. Louis (2010), and Sacred Heart-Griffin (2012).
