Eighth-ranked Cathedral bounced back from a disappointing loss at Bishop Chatard in week four of the high school football season with a 49-6 victory Friday night at North Central. Irish quarterback Danny O’Neil threw five first-half touchdown passes and ran for a sixth TD as the Irish forged a 49-0 halftime lead and invoked a running clock for the second half under the IHSAA’s Mercy Rule. On the second Fighting Irish possession, Keith Long caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from O’Neil. Zach Meeks then found the end zone on receptions of 11 yards and five yards, making the score 21-0 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Devaughn Slaughter took a pass four yards for a TD followed by O’Neil’s 10-yard scoring run, a 52-yard Jackson Lockhart punt return for a touchdown, and Meeks third reception for an 8-yard score. North Central’s Heath Kizer tossed an 8-yard scoring pass to Demetrius Averitte on the final play of the game to put the Panthers on the scoreboard. O’Neil completed 14 of 21 passes for 135 yards. Cathedral’s Jalen Bonds rushed for 68 yards on eight attempts, while Long led the Irish receivers with 54 yards on five catches. Cathedral’s defense held North Central to 151 yards of total offense. The Fighting Irish improve their record to 3-2, while the Panthers fall to 0-5. Cathedral travels to Lexington, Kentucky Friday to face reigning Class 5A state champion Frederick Douglass. The Broncos have a 2-2 record including a 17-14 victory at Louisville Trinity.
