Class 6A third-ranked Indianapolis Cathedral lost at fifth-rated Brownsburg, 45-31, in high school football Friday night. The balanced Bulldogs’ offense rolled up 510 yards to overcome a 388-yard, four touchdown passing performance by Irish quarterback Danny O’Neil. Brownsburg quarterback Jake Dunn completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Cayden Olinger on the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead. One minute later, O’Neil tied the score when he tossed a 51-yard scoring pass to Albren Johnson. Dunn connected again with Olinger in the closing seconds of the opening quarter, this time for a 17-yard TD, giving Brownsburg a 14-7 lead. Following a 21-yard field goal by Van Krisiloff early in the second quarter, O’Neil found Devaughn Slaughter in the back left corner of the end zone with a 27-yard touchdown pass, moving the Irish ahead 17-14. Late in the quarter, Garrett Sherrell scored on a 1-yard run to put the Bulldogs on top at the half. Brownsburg pulled away in the third period on rushing touchdowns from Sherrell and Dunn and a 25- yard Spencer Porath field goal. O’Neil’s two scoring passes to Keith Long in the final quarter were not enough as Dunn added his third TD pass, 28 yards to Corey Smith, to ensure the Bulldog victory. O’Neil completed 22 of 39 passes and tied his career high for passing yards in a game. In doing so, he became the first Irish quarterback to surpass 6,000 career passing yards. Long caught eight passes for 123 yards. For Brownsburg, Dunn finished 11 of 15 passing for 258 yards, while Sherrell rushed for 175 yards on 26 attempts. The Bulldogs improved their record to 2-0 this season. Cathedral, now 1-1, hosts Class 6A ninth-ranked Penn Friday. The Kingsmen are unbeaten with convincing wins over reigning Class 5A champ Valparaiso and 5A sixth-ranked Mishawaka. The Irish won at Penn, 35-21, last season.
