Senior Gwen Howard signs with Duke University

Whitko High School senior Gwen Howard signed her intentions to compete in track and field for Duke University on Wednesday, December 4 at WJSHS in South Whitley. Howard was congratulated by her family, Glen and Tracy Howard of Pierceton, brothers, grandparents, coaches, teammates, WJSHS staff members and community well-wishers. Gwen is the current school record holder in shot put - 48’2.5”, discus - 142’3” and the 4x400M relay - 4:12.15 and a three-year state qualifier headed into her senior year. Last year she was the Three River Conference champion in shot put and discus, sectional champion in shot put and discus; regional champion in shot put and placed fourth in shot put and fifth in discus during state competition. Her June 15, 2024 shot put throw of 47’8” made her an All-American, placing her second against 49 contenders in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor competition. Gwen also is in the top 3-percent academically of her class. “We’re extremely proud of Gwen and excited to see what she accomplishes in her fourth and final season with the Whitko Wildcats,” said Whitko track and field coach Ashley O’Haver.
