City officials, state lawmakers, and community leaders gathered today for the groundbreaking of a major renovation project at the Byers Softball Complex—marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of South Bend’s most well-used recreational venues, now poised to host local, regional, and even national softball tournaments. Located on the west side of South Bend, the Byers Softball Complex has been a cornerstone for athletes and families for over 25 years. With strong support from the State of Indiana—led by Senator David Niezgodski—the City of South Bend secured a $3 million grant to fund comprehensive upgrades to the site. The renovation will include a full reconstruction of all five softball fields, including the four primary fields in the main complex and a fifth field located just west of the area. These improvements are designed to enhance playability, safety, and the complex’s ability to host events on a local, regional, and national level. Additional upgrades include a new press box, ADA-compliant concession and restroom facilities, an upgraded entry plaza and gateway, two new batting cages, a community splashpad, and historical signage honoring the complex’s legacy. Overgrown shrubbery around the outfields will also be removed to improve sightlines and aesthetics, creating a more welcoming atmosphere for players and fans alike. “Byers has long been a cornerstone of South Bend’s recreation scene,” said Jordan Gathers, Executive Director of Venues Parks & Arts. “These upgrades not only preserve the complex’s rich history but also prepare it to host major events, from local leagues to national tournaments, ensuring that it continues to serve athletes and families for years to come.” To accommodate construction, all spring and summer 2025 softball games will be temporarily relocated to alternative sites, including Boehm Park, Potawatomi Park, Boland Park, Walker Field, and Veterans Memorial Park.
