On Thursday, June 4, 2026, the City of South Bend, along with state legislators and Common Council members, celebrated the completion of major improvements at the Byers Softball Complex. The $3 million project was funded through a state grant secured by the City with the leadership and support of state senators David Niezgodski and Ryan Mishler. The enhancements are designed to expand recreational opportunities, support local athletics, and strengthen South Bend’s park system for residents and visitors alike. “Byers Softball Complex on South Bend’s southwest side has provided a fun, welcoming environment for athletes and families alike,” said Mayor James Mueller. “This state investment advances our commitment to quality parks and amenities across the city and reestablishes this premier softball destination for years to come.” The renovation included extensive upgrades throughout the complex. Improvements feature a modernized press box, concessions area, and operational facilities, along with the reconstruction of all four main softball infields and a complete rebuild of the Blue Field. The project also included upgraded irrigation and drainage systems, a new entry plaza gateway, updated fencing, historical signage, and new shade structures to improve the visitor experience. Additional enhancements include a resurfaced parking lot, repairs to concrete walkways, new monument signage at the main entrance, and the removal of overgrown outfield shrubbery to improve visibility and aesthetics. The project also introduced a new neighborhood splash pad featuring Life Floor® safety surfacing—the first installation of its kind in the City of South Bend—providing a new recreational amenity for local families and children. Together, these improvements modernize the facility, enhance accessibility and safety, and help ensure the Byers Softball Complex remains a premier destination for recreation and competitive softball for years to come.
