The Golden Bears traveled to Franklin Community High School on a very warm, but very windy night for a competition honoring the great Bill Self. Seniors Isaac Zermeno and Naomi Ricardo were recognized for being this year's Bill Self Community Service Award winners from Shelbyville. As for the action on the track, the girls were led by the freshman duo of Macey Robbins and Jordyn Noe. Macey cruised to a new high school PR in the 800m run, finishing in a runner-up time of 2:31.05h (there was an error in the automatic timing). Jordyn obliterated her old 300m hurdle PR en route to a 3rd place finish and a time of 51.12. The boys enjoyed two event victories, courtesy of senior Blake Hughes in the 400m dash (50.87) and junior Jaylen Eads in the pole vault (12' 6"). Senior Logan Page provided support for the team by means of a second place finish in high jump (5' 8") and a third place finish in the 100m dash (11.57). Fellow senior Christian Powell took second in the 200m dash (23.59) and sophomore Reuben Martins-Thomas set another PR in the shot put (41' 8") on his way to a second place finish of his own. The 4x400m relay of Isaac Zermeno (Sr), Powell, Page, and Hughes claimed yet another second place finish for their team and a big season PR (3:32.41). Page and Hughes finished with splits of 51.46 and 50.05, respectively, both huge PRs. Zermeno and sophomore Joaquin Delgado have been proven to be an effective 1-2 punch in the hurdle races this season as they each took home third place finishes in the 300m hurdles (45.61) and 110 hurdles (16.93), respectively. Rounding out the top-3 finishers was freshman Ethan Griffin in the discus. His toss of 110' 8" was good enough for third. The girls team finished in 6th place with 43.5 points, up from last year's 7th place finish with 29 points. But the highlight of the evening was seeing the boys team score 104 points collectively, good enough for a 4th place finish in a tight team race. It was a huge improvement over last year's 47 points and 6th place finish. Up next will be a rescheduled home meet on Monday, April 21st with Rushville and Southwestern.
