The North Vermillion swim team competed in the Wabash River Conference Preliminary meet on Thursday January 18th. Nearly every swimmer on the Falcon’s roster saw personal records in their events at South Vermillion High School. Emery Strubinger, also a member of the Varsity Basketball team, becomes the first North Vermillion Swimmer to advance to the Wabash River Conference Finals as an individual since Andrew Culbreath advanced in 2018. Strubinger is the #4 seed in the 100 Backstroke on Saturday. No swimmer in the backstroke event competed for the WRC title in 2023. With a win, Strubinger would become the first WRC Champion in swimming at North Vermillion since Kevin Byrum won the 100 Backstroke in 2016. North Vermillion also had numerous swimmers be named as alternates for various events. In the case that a swimmer in the finals would be unable to compete, one of these swimmers could advance to the Finals in their place. Those swimmers are - Austin Ball, 50 Freestyle - Ben Winland, 100 Freestyle - Brandon Miller, 100 Freestyle - Payton Russell, 100 Backstroke - Oakley Downs, 100 Breaststroke - Owen Hazelwood, 100 Breaststroke While Strubinger will be the only swimmer competing as an individual, the Falcons will field 3 relays in the finals on Saturday. Those are: 200 Medley Relay - Payton Russell, Owen Hazelwood, John Clay, and Austin Ball 200 Free Relay - John Clay, Ben Winland, Emery Strubinger, and Austin Ball 400 Free Relay - John Clay, Brandon Miller, Ben Winland, and Austin Ball.
