Boys Basketball: Centerville Recap

The Arabians traveled out east tonight for their final regular season contest against the Centerville Bulldogs. It was a low-scoring contest to start, as the Bulldogs turned it over early but the PH shooters could not find the mark from deep. Joe Estes finished from the low post for the first Arabian basket, and then a Brandt Gray steal led to a Cooper Sims layup to give Pendleton its first lead at 4-3. Estes and Sims would each score again as the game stayed tight early and then another steal by Gray helped Evan Mozingo score his first bucket of the contest. The Bulldogs would execute offensively at the end of the first quarter to tie the game at 12 points apiece. Centerville got out on the front foot early in the second quarter, managing a lead for a few possessions, until a three-pointer from Hayden Fox put the Arabians back in front, 20-19. The teams would trade a couple baskets as the game marched towards halftime, and the Arabians just couldn't seem to pull away after getting more points from Sims, both inside and outside. The game went to the halftime intermission tied at 29. Pendleton Heights would start off hot in the third quarter, with Estes dropping a slick bounce pass from the elbow to a cutting Mozingo for the first two points of the second half. After a stop on the defensive end, Ashann Singh would get to the paint in transition before kicking the ball back out to Mozingo for three. The Arabians chalked up another stop on the other end of the floor, and this time it would be Singh running the same back-cut play on his side for a Sims layup which put PH up by 7. However, the Bulldogs came storming back, two and then three at a time, and tied the game back up at 36. Sims added another three, followed by a Fox two-pointer, but Centerville would answer and the Arabians would only carry a 1-point lead into the fourth quarter. On their first possession in the fourth, Sims drove baseline and found an open Gray in the corner for a big three that would spark a huge run for Pendleton Heights. Sims would grab a couple of steals on the defensive end and scored the next 9 points for the Arabians, who forced Centerville timeouts across a 12-2 run in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Although the Bulldogs refused to quit, the Arabians were able to manage a comfortable margin, taking care of the ball as they handled the Centerville pressure and found Singh for a layup, making the score 55-48 with two minutes to play. That would be as close as Centerville would get, as Pendleton would make their layups and free throws en route to the 62-48 victory. Sims led all scorers with an impressive 30 points. He was 12/16 from the floor, including 4/6 from behind the three-point line. Sims had 3 steals on the game, as did Gray. Gray contributed 6 a team-high 6 assists to go along with his 3 points, 2 rebounds, and a blocked shot. Singh was the leading rebounder for the Arabians tonight, pulling down 7 boards while also scoring 5 points and dishing out 5 assists. Mozingo scored 9 with 5 boards, 2 assists and a block, and Estes scored 6 points with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Fox added 9 points, including 2 threes, and 2 rebounds and 2 assists. The Arabians now set their sights on a Tuesday night Sectional matchup with Greenfield-Central. Their matchup will be the second game at the Muncie Fieldhouse that night.
