Boys Basketball: Tri-West Recap

By Michael Smith | Jan 26, 2025 1:44 PM

The Arabians hosted the Tri-West Bruins tonight in an out-of-conference matchup, and for the second night in row the Arabians battled until the end but could not come away with the victory. Evan Mozingo led Pendleton Heights out of the gate with the first nine points for his team, coming on two three-pointers followed by the hoop and the harm for the old-fashioned three-point play. Joe Estes added a pair of free throws after that to make it 11-7. A couple scores late in the quarter for each team left the tally at PH 16, Tri-West 12 after one. The second quarter went back-and-forth, and just when it seemed the Bruins were gaining momentum, Ashann Singh scored on back-to-back putbacks, tying the game at 25 apiece. Each team would add another triple late in the quarter, making the score at halftime 28-28. Brandt Gray started the third quarter hot for the Arabians, converting two shots from beyond the arc. The Bruins would answer and take the lead, but Singh found Mozingo on a kick-out to the wing for three and PH took the lead by 1. The final minutes of the third quarter seemingly belonged to the home team, with Singh and Mozingo adding more points, but the Bruins nailed a half-court shot as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third, making the score 43-40 in favor of the Arabians. Both teams came out aggressively to start the fourth, and within a minute the score was tied at 45. Singh answered the next score with a basket of his own. Tri-West would score again, but Estes would make a pair of free throws to tie it back up at 49-49 with five minutes to play. The visiting Bruins enjoyed a 7-0 run for the next two minutes of game time, but the Arabians responded with two free throws each from Singh and Mozingo. PH ended the night a perfect 14/14 from the line. A putback increased the Bruins lead to five, but a big three by Mozingo made it a two-point game with under a minute to play. Tri-West made one of their two free-throws, and the Arabians had the ball with a chance to tie, but once again couldn't find the bottom of the net, and the Bruins would escape with the victory, 59-56. Mozingo finished with 22 pts on 5/10 3-point shooting, and tied for the team lead in rebounds with 7. Singh also grabbed 7 boards while scoring 12 points. Gray scored 8 points, and Hayden Fox scored 5 while giving 4 assists and getting 3 steals. Estes scored 4 with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. The Arabians travel to Greenfield Central on Friday night (1/31), and return home to rumble with the Royals of Southeastern on Saturday (2/1).
