Tonight's HHC matchup saw the Golden Bears of Shelbyville earn a road win over the PHHS Arabians, 62-42. Shelbyville struck first with a 7-0 run, prompting a Pendleton Heights timeout. The Arabians came to life soon after the stoppage, starting with a three-pointer by Evan Mozingo, and then a couple of nice assists, first from Ashann Singh to Cooper Sims, then from Sims to Hayden Fox for a three. This run caused a Shelbyville timeout with the score 10-8 in favor of the visitors. There was good action to follow on both ends, including another three by Mozingo and a corner three from Joe Estes to give the Arabians a 15-14 lead after the first quarter. Singh found an open Sam Baker for a layup in transition to start the second quarter, but the Golden Bears then rattled off 8 unanswered points to take the lead by five. Both teams traded scores as the second quarter ticked away, and Shelbyville took a 27-23 lead into halftime. Pendleton Heights opened the second half with some solid defense, punctuated by Singh's solid rebounding, but the Arabians could not convert any chances at the other end. After a couple of minutes, Mozingo hit another three to bring the Arabians within 1, but that was as close as they would get. Even as the PHHS scoring improved to end the quarter, Shelbyville began to break through the Arabians' defense, and pushed their lead to ten with a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter. The Golden Bears retained the alternating possession to start the fourth quarter, and held onto the ball for a minute and 45 seconds of game time, even though they missed the two free throws at the end of the long possession. Estes would add a couple of inside baskets for the Arabians, but each time Shelbyville countered with a triple to extend the lead. It was clear that Shelbyville had the momentum in the fourth quarter with their hot outside shooting, and they saw the game through to secure the victory, their twelfth of the season. Estes led the Arabians with 12 points, followed closely by Mozingo's 11. Brandt Gray added 7 points in the second half, and Cooper Sims and Hayden Fox scored 5 each. Singh grabbed 6 rebounds and added 4 assists and 2 steals for PHHS. Next up for the Arabians will be an away contest at Delta on Friday, January 24, followed by a home game against Tri-West the following night.
