At their last meeting the South Madison Community School Board of Trustees approved Avery Mayfield as the next girls’ volleyball head coach at Pendleton Heights. Mayfield spent the 2025 season as the Arabians JV coach. Mayfield played for Hall of Fame Volleyball Coach, Steve Shondell at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie and was a 4-time IHSAA State Champion. Following a stint as a collegiate player at the University of Southern Indiana, Mayfield received her nursing degree from Ball State University. Mayfield returned to her high school alma mater to start her coaching career. As an assistant coach for the Burris Owls, she helped lead the team to the 2023 IHSAA State Championship. Mayfield also has head coach experience coaching multiple age groups in the highly regarded Munciana Volleyball Club. “I’m incredibly excited and honored to accept the Head Volleyball Coach position at Pendleton Heights High School. I can’t wait to build on the program’s tradition, develop our athletes on and off the court, and see our community show up and bring energy to our games. I’m proud to represent Pendleton Heights and excited for what’s ahead.” Statement from Chad Smith, Athletic Director at Pendleton Heights: “We are happy to have Avery Mayfield as our next volleyball head coach. Her championship pedigree as a player, assistant coach, and her leadership at the club level made her the right choice. Avery’s direct and honest delivery, her old school work ethic, and her background as a nurse provides the perfect balance in mentoring young women. We are excited for her to get to work.” Avery will meet with anyone interested in playing volleyball to discuss the remainder of the offseason on Monday.
