On Friday January 4, North Athletics will induct Natalie Schmett, Matt Hussman, and the 2014 Girls Golf Team into the Athletic Hall of Fame. 2011 Natalie Schmett Natalie began her golf career by taking lessons and playing in EJGA (Evansville Junior Golf Association) and IJGA (Indiana Junior Golf Association) tournaments. Once at North High School, Natalie quickly became one of the best Evansville players in school history. In her four years at North High Schoo,l Natalie garnered many honors, but none more exciting than winning the 2010 IHSAA State Girls Golf State Championship. The tournament was held at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, IN. Battling persistent rain and strong winds (some reaching as high as thirty miles an hour), she took the lead as the first day came to an end. Natalie held the lead each day and won by five strokes over the runner-up and ten strokes over the third place finishers. Natalie's three under par total (141), for the two day tournament, was the second lowest score in the thirty-eight year history of the IHSAA Girls Golf Tournament. She also set a record for the lowest score at The Legends of Indiana course, during the state finals. In doing so, Natalie became the first Evansville girl golfer to ever win the State Championship. Perhaps the second most impressive accomplishment was being named to the All-State (First Team) each of her four years. Only one other Husky has ever achieved such an honor. In her four years at North, Natalie won titles in three City tournaments, two Conference tournaments, four Sectionals, and three Regional individual titles. She was also a four-year state finalist. Natalie was selected to All-City, All-Conference, All-Sectional, and All- Regional teams, in addition to her four All-State team selections. Her senior win-loss record was an astounding 667-2. Natalie has also won the Evansville Women's City Championship twice. Natalie accepted an athletic scholarship to play golf at Jacksonville (FL) University. As a freshman, Natalie won the Wendy's Golf Tournament, marking the first major tournament win in the school's history. After her career as a JU Dolphin, Natalie played in several LPGA qualifying schools and played on the Symetra tour. Since that time she has earned certification as a professional golf instructor, and has her own business in Scottsdale, AZ. 2000 Matt Hussmann Matt Hussmann earned nine varsity letters during his high school athletic career. He excelled in cross country, basketball, and track. Matt led the way for the Huskies to win three team City championships (1996, 1997, 1998); two SIAC championships (1997, 1998), and a Regional title (1996). As an individual, Matt won one City title (1998); three SIAC titles (1997, 1998, 1999) and a Sectional title (1999). In both his junior year (1998) and in his senior year (1999), Matt qualified for the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships. Matt turned his attention to running both distance events (1600M and 3200M) during track season. He won City titles in both events as a junior and as a senior (1999, 2000). Matt also won both events as a junior and as a senior during the SIAC meet. After winning the (2000) Regional Track title in the 1600M run Matt qualified for the 1999 IHSAA State Championships. During basketball season Matt helped the Huskies to three major titles in 1998; City, SIAC, and Sectionals. As a testament to his athletic talent, character, and academics, Matt was honored with four Kiwanis Awards. He also was Academic All-City team selection all four years and was selected as the N-Men's "All-Around Athlete of the Year" in 2000. After graduating from North High School, Matt entered Butler University, where he ran both cross country and track. The Bulldogs won four straight Horizon League Cross Country Conference Championships. They earned a spot at the Division I NCAA national championships two of his four years.
