The Lady Eddies basketball team saw their season come to an end Wednesday night in the district semi-final game, as Berrien Springs was able to hold on in the final seconds and escape 57-59. The Eddies showed up ready to play and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. After a Shamrock flurry to finish the half, the challengers led the defending district champions by ten points (33-23). The third stanza was a back & forth battle that started with a Shamrock run pushing their lead to fifteen points (38-23), where the Eddies took the gloves off. Trading plays at each end, gaining an upper hand was a matter of will. Down 12 points with 1:22 left in the third, the Eddies cut that deficit nearly in half at the break, down 41-48. Back-to-back-to-back steals from Shelby Laubach, Liyah Worthington and Shyann Flanery kept the momentum going the right way as Laubach scored in transition to bring the Eddies within five (43-48). After another Laubach jumper in the paint, the Eddies got a stop on defense and Kya Shier found Worthington inside where she was fouled and sent to the line. Hitting one of two, the Eddies were within a bucket (46-48). At the 4:45 mark, a rebound from Shier on a Shamrock miss, and Shier took off up the right side finding Laubach flying up the floor. A terrific pass led to another Laubach layup as the building erupted with fans cheering and the game was tied up at 48-48. The Shamrocks answered with two quick baskets before Shier went coast to coast and got hammered, but a missed call sent the Shamrocks back on the break the other way. With 45 seconds remaining and the Eddies down six (51-57), senior guard Mallory Schrock deftly tossed a sideline inbound pass to Laubach who dove to the rim after setting a backdoor screen. The Shamrocks couldn't recover in time as Laubach scored at the rim cutting the deficit to four (53-57). The Shamrocks inbounded the ball and advanced across the timeline where Shelby Laubach flew in and stole the ball from behind the ballhandler, and broke for the Eddie basket as the Shamrocks could only foul her to prevent the easy two. Laubach's first free throw missed but she connected on the second and the Eddies were within three. That's where precious seconds ran off the clock as the Shamrocks moved the ball up the floor and got a shot attempt that was rebounded by Schrock where she was fouled and sent to the line. After hitting one of two, down a basket (55-57), and following the Eddies time out, the Shamrocks hit a layup with twelve seconds left. The Eddies inbounded to Laubach who flew up the floor and scored, but the clock just didn't have enough ticks left as Berrien Springs didn't have to throw it in with 4.4 seconds left. The Eddies can be proud of that effort where there was at two and probably three, distinct points where their opponent could have taken control of that game and was never able to as they outscored the Shamrocks in both the third and fourth quarters of the game. Shelby Laubach finished with 23 points to lead the Eddies, she also had 13 deflections, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Liyah Worthington rung up 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals, Kya Shier hit for 10 points, 6 rebounds, 8 deflections and a steal, Mallory Schrock had 5 points 6 rebounds and 4 steals, Shyann Flanery finished with 4 points, 9 boards and 2 steals, Samantha O'brien 2 points, 1 rebound, and Harlow Gropp had 1 point, 3 rebounds and 2 steals
