Cathedral earned its third consecutive football win on the road Friday night when it defeated La Salle High School in Cincinnati 39-26. The Irish gained more than 300 yards on the ground for the first time since the 2021 semi-state with running back Jalen Bonds and quarterback Danny O’Neil each rushing for 166 yards. The Fighting Irish scored touchdowns on their first four possessions to take a 28-6 halftime lead. O’Neil ran for two scores and tossed TD passes of five yards to Devaughn Slaughter and 32 yards to Albren Johnson. La Salle’s Patrick McLaughlin threw a 61-yard scoring pass to Purdue recruit Koy Beasley, but Cathedral’s Jackson Lockhart blocked the extra point kick. The Lancers scored on their first two possessions of the second half, narrowing the deficit to 28-19. McLaughlin connected with Beasley and Max Welter on touchdown passes of 48 and 29 yards respectively. Late in the third quarter, Zach Meeks caught a 3-yard scoring pass from O’Neil, who then completed a successful two-point conversion pass to Keith Long. Van Krisiloff kicked a career-long tying 35-yard field goal with four minutes remaining in the game to conclude the Irish scoring. O’Neil completed 22 of 30 attempts for 150 yards and Meeks finished with seven receptions for 41 yards. McLaughlin completed 16 of 20 passes for 268 yards and Beasley caught seven of his throws for 158 yards. The Irish ran for 338 yards as a team, while Cathedral’s defense held the Lancers to just 38 yards on the ground. Cathedral improves its record to 5-2. The Fighting Irish will next face Roncalli, renewing a regular season rivalry that ended following the 2010 season when the Royals replaced Cathedral on the schedule with Brebeuf Jesuit. The Irish have won the last 12 outings against Roncalli including their last meeting, 30- 10, in the 2018 postseason. Cathedral leads the all-time series, which began in 1969, 22-12.
