Tonight’s matchup is the first-ever football game between Indianapolis Cathedral and Lexington Frederick Douglass. The Broncos won the Class 5A state championship in Kentucky last season with a 15-0 record before moving up to Class 6A this year. Cathedral has a 3-2 record with all three victories coming with a running clock in the second half as the Irish led by at least 35 points at the intermission. Last week, quarterback Danny O’Neil threw five first half touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 49-6 win at North Central. Frederick Douglass is 2-2 so far including a season-opening loss to Akron Archbishop Hoban, ranked 25th in the nation by High School Football America, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The Broncos bounced back the following week for a 17-14 win at Louisville Trinity. Frederick Douglass lost last week, 6-0, to Kentucky’s second-rated team in Class 4A, Corbin High School. The Broncos’ defense has given up only 20 combined points in its last three games, led by three Division I college recruits that are committed to Michigan, Purdue and Northwestern.
