Seventh-rated Indianapolis Cathedral returned to its winning ways in high school football Friday night when it defeated number-eight Penn, 35-6, at Arlington. Irish quarterback Danny O’Neil threw first half touchdown passes to five different receivers, making the halftime lead 35-0 and invoking a running clock for the entire second half under the IHSAA’s Mercy Rule. Cathedral’s first two drives lasted less than a minute each with O’Neil completing scoring passes of 10 yards to Devaughn Slaughter and 29 yards to Albren Johnson. Still in the first quarter, O’Neil finished a 10-play drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Keith Long. O’Neil connected with Ty Carroll for a 45-yard TD pass early in the second period. Zach Meeks then leaped high in the end zone for a 7-yard grab, somehow keeping his feet in bounds on the end line, with just 30 seconds to play in the first half. Penn’s Vince Horner returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring. Cathedral’s defense held the Kingsmen to just 124 yards of total offense – 64 yards rushing and 60 yards passing. O’Neil completed 15 of 25 passes for 218 yards and led the Irish in rushing with 54 yards on eight attempts. Long caught six passes for 75 yards. Cathedral is now 2-1 on the season with the only loss coming a week earlier at Brownsburg. Penn falls to 2-1 with its first defeat of the season. The Fighting Irish host undefeated rival Bishop Chatard next Friday. The top-ranked and defending class 3A state champion Trojans defeated Roncalli, 14-7, Friday after wins against Brebeuf Jesuit and Arsenal Tech. Cathedral leads the all-time series with Chatard 29-19. The Irish have won the last four outings against the Trojans including a 38-0 shutout at Chatard last season.
