Benton Central Falls to McCutcheon Despite Strong Performance from Grant Weise

May 14, 2025 — Oxford, IN The Benton Central Varsity Bison put forth a competitive effort on Tuesday night but ultimately fell to a tough McCutcheon Mavericks squad, 8-3. Despite the loss, junior standout Grant Weise delivered a stellar performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two singles, and two RBIs. Weise's offensive highlight came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when he launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to bring the Bison back into the game. He also singled in the third and seventh innings, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle. McCutcheon struck early, scoring a run in the top of the first on a single from Jon Riley. The Mavericks extended their lead in the second with a pair of runs, including a sacrifice fly by Mason Jones and an RBI single from Zayne Newgent. The Bison responded in the fifth with Weise’s homer, cutting into the deficit, but McCutcheon continued to capitalize on timely hitting and patient at-bats. The Mavericks drew six walks and stole four bases over the course of the game to keep pressure on the Benton Central defense. Nolan Winkler took the loss for the Bison despite striking out eight over 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and six runs (five earned). Reed Grimes earned the win for McCutcheon, tossing six innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned), and striking out seven. Kaydric Tyson also had a solid day at the plate for Benton Central, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. McCutcheon was led by Newgent, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Riley added two hits of his own, and Jackson Lancaster drew three walks to aid the Mavericks’ offensive effort. The Bison look to bounce back when they take on Frontier on Monday, May 19th for Senior Night.
