Benton Central Jr-Sr High School

The Cross Country teams at Benton Central have been having a successful season, with individual champions in multiple meets and favorable placement in area invitationals. While not typically considered a small school, BC offers many sport and extracurricular opportunities which draw from the smaller-medium pool of students. Even so, our athletes are encouraged to participate in multiple activities at a time, to the benefit of all programs. Dual sport and multi-curricular athletes Lillian Weigle and Matthew McKinnis were bright spots for an otherwise dismal start to Saturday at the New Prairie Invitational. Plagued by continuing lightning delays, the New Prairie Invite finally got underway with modified race formats. One of the Regions largest meets, with teams from all over the Midwest traveling to New Carlisle, doubled up races, with girls starting 3 minutes after the start of the boys’ race. Our varsity boys were led through the pack of nearly 200 boys by senior captain Matthew in a time of 18:47 and senior Sam Fleming at 19:04. The entire field of girl runners were led by Lillian who earned another crown as Class AA Champion in a time of 19:17 and clocked the fastest time for any girl in any of the races of the day. Our other Lady Bison runner Maggie Rayman earned a ribbon with a 24th place finish at 21:33. In addition to these accomplishments, five other runners had season best times on the muddiest and wettest course we’ve seen in years. BC welcomes 11 other teams to its home invitational, the Bison Stampede next Saturday starting with the girls’ race at 9 AM.
