A New Era Begins: Benton Central Welcomes Hall of Fame Coach Herb King

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Benton Community School Corporation Board of Trustees Approves Herb King as Head Football Coach at Benton Central High School Oxford, Ind. — December 15, 2025 — The Benton Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Herb King as the next Varsity Head Football Coach at Benton Central High School during its meeting on Monday, December 15, 2025. Coach King brings 36 years of coaching experience and a proven track record of rebuilding and revitalizing football programs. Over the course of his career, he has compiled an overall record of 209–168, leading successful turnarounds at North Putnam, South Decatur, Rockville, Seeger, and Fountain Central. His teams have captured four sectional championships, two regional titles, and one semi-state championship. King is the all-time winningest coach at the former Rockville High School (now Parke Heritage High School), where he posted a 102–52 record and guided the program to a state finals appearance in 2007. His accomplishments have earned him induction into several prestigious halls of fame, including the Indiana Football Hall of Fame (2022), the Illiana Sports Hall of Fame (2023), and the Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2024). In addition, he was named the Colts 1A Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, as well as Gridiron Digest Coach of the Year in 2007. Coach King now turns his attention to Benton Central as the Bison look to build momentum and move forward from a 21-game losing streak entering the 2026 season. His history of developing competitive programs and fostering strong team culture positions him well to lead the next chapter of Benton Central football. “We are excited to welcome Coach King to Benton Central,” said school officials. “His experience, leadership, and commitment to student-athletes make him an excellent fit for our program and our community.” Coach King and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 38 years. They have two children: Molly, a special education teacher at Northview High School in Brazil, Indiana, and Matt, the Offensive Coordinator at Marian University Indianapolis.
