Avon Orioles Girls Tennis Eyes Another Strong Season After Years of Sustained Success The Avon High School girls’ tennis program enters the 2026 spring season with high expectations, returning nearly its entire varsity roster from a 2025 campaign that saw the Orioles finish 16–6 at the varsity level and 14–5 in junior varsity play. The depth and consistency of last year’s results reflect a program that has been one of the most successful in Indiana over the past decade. The Orioles’ resumé underscores that sustained excellence: nine sectional championships in the last twelve seasons, along with two regional titles and a semi-state championship during that span. Those accomplishments have helped establish Avon as a perennial contender in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference and a respected postseason force. Head Coach Mize credits the program’s culture and community support for its long-term achievements. “Our coaching staff of Dmitrii Voschenkov, Ethan Bodnar, and myself believes it takes a village,” Mize said. “Our players, families, coaches, and community all play a part in helping these girls grow. That support is what made last season special, and it’s what drives us into this one.” Avon returns a deep and experienced group of varsity match contributors from last season, including Brittain Bills, Nora Corn, Melanie Janko, Kayden Krawiec, Siena Lister, Samantha Miller, Olivia Schurr, Delaney Smith, Zoe Smyth, and Brooke Widner. Their collective experience provides stability across all seven varsity positions and gives the coaching staff flexibility in shaping both singles and doubles lineups. Doubles play, an area of notable improvement last season, is expected to remain a strength. Returning pairings have demonstrated stronger communication and more assertive net play during early practices, traits that could prove decisive in close conference matches. After playing the last two seasons at number three singles, Junior Brooke Widner, is ready to make the jump to the top position. Who plays the next two singles spots will be highly contested. The program’s depth extends beyond the varsity courts. Several players from last year’s successful JV roster are competing for expanded roles, creating a competitive training environment that Coach Mize believes will elevate the entire team. “Our returning players understand the level of consistency required to compete in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference,” Mize said. “They have worked extremely hard this winter and they’ve set a strong example for the younger athletes coming up behind them.” With a veteran roster, a strong developmental pipeline, and a history of postseason success, the Orioles enter the 2026 season positioned to contend once again for conference and sectional titles. Avon opens its season April 6th looking to continue the upward trajectory that has defined the program for more than a decade.
