Lady Tigers fire toasty 164 and defeat Daleville; fall to Wapahani on fifth score

The Tigers The Yorktown Lady Tigers are playing some serious team golf, and junior Alysse Taylor epitomizes the success of the trending Yorktown golf team. Alysse was the low-scoring Tiger last night, breaking 40 for the first time in her career with a front nine 39 at Crestview Golf Club. This is the second time in four events Alysse has been the low-scoring Yorktown Tiger, and she did it from the 5-spot in last night's varsity lineup. Alysse's huge leap as a junior is a result of hard work, improved mental toughness, and considerable directional improvement of her tee ball. Ms. Taylor is a prime example of what happens when a talented player is self-aware and mature enough to identify the holes in her game and make them strengths (short game in this case). This does not happen overnight, and without question Alysse has done the work. Right behind Alysse were senior captain Grace Turner (40) and freshman Lilly Duncan, who was coming off an 81 and an individual County Championship. Grace and Lilly, a veteran and a newcomer, bring incredible mental toughness to our team, which is becoming a theme with this group. Both players possess the ability to shake off bad shots, even bad holes, and fight for the lowest possible score based on their games and the challenges the golf course presents. Lindsey Mathews (45) and Lucy Melton (50) did not have their best stuff on Thursday but will be key pieces in this lineup all season long. Team golf means we have each other's backs and step up when our teammates struggle. This team, more than any team Yorktown has had in years, understands this. Lindsey is the same player who as a freshman (just a sophomore) had the second-best scoring average on the team. Lucy is the same player who fired a career-low 85 on Saturday at the Muncie Elks and helped lead Yorktown to a County title (team score 340). Golf is hard. -------------------- The Boehm For the die hards, Coach Boehm continues to age in reverse, similar to F. Scott Fitzgerald's Benjamin Button. Unlike Ben, Coach Boehm is happily married to his beautiful bride Roxanne and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren when off the golf course. Once our coaching staff decides on Saturday's outfitting for the Monroe Central Invitational, we will be sure to update Coach Boehm's wardrobe as well. -------------------- The Opposition Wapahani played very well, and our hats are off to them, as the Raiders also shot 164 (and had a lower fifth score w/ 48), led by 37 and 38 at the top of the lineup from freshman Lexi Taylor and senior Kenzi Brannon. Daleville shot 202. See you next week, Golf Fans!
