A Piece of Whiting Basketball History Finds Its Home

By Adam Musielak | Oct 27, 2026 8:52 AM

As we turn the page toward the winter season and another year of high school basketball, a special piece of Whiting High School history has found its way back home. Recently, Athletic Director Adam Musielak received an email from alum Julie Meyer, whose late husband, Gary Meyer, served as the Whiting High School boys basketball head coach in the 1980s. During that time, Coach Meyer led the Oilers to the school's most recent boys basketball sectional championship in 1981. While going through her husband's belongings, Julie discovered a framed letter from legendary former Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight, congratulating Coach Meyer and the team on their sectional championship. Recognizing the significance of the letter and believing her husband would have wanted it to be part of Whiting's basketball history, Julie generously offered to donate it to the school for display alongside the sectional championship trophy. Today, that letter has a new home in the Whiting athletic trophy case, proudly displayed next to the trophy the Oilers earned more than four decades ago. The gesture is about more than a letter or a championship. It is a reminder of the people, memories, and traditions that make Whiting athletics so special. Coach Meyer's legacy remains part of our school's history, and thanks to Julie's thoughtfulness, a meaningful memory of her husband will continue to be shared with generations of Oilers to come. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Meyer for thinking of Whiting and for her generosity in sharing such a treasured piece of her family's history with our school. We are honored to give the letter a home where it can be proudly displayed and appreciated for years to come. Basketball holds a special place in Indiana, where the game is woven into the fabric of our communities and traditions. Here in Whiting, we look forward to carrying that tradition forward as another basketball season approaches. As we prepare for the upcoming season, we are reminded that being an Oiler means being part of something bigger than any one team or season. **Once an Oiler, Always an Oiler.**
