The Western Boone 8th grade football team defeated rival Lebanon at home on Tuesday evening by a final score of 22 – 8. In the victory, the Stars employed a strong defense from the start that allowed the offense to scrap its game plan early and find its way by focusing on exploiting what the Tiger defense was giving up. After a sloppy first quarter, that was salvaged by a bend but don’t break defense, and huge punt by Carter Crahen that flipped the field, the Stars offense finally got rolling. Wyatt Redman would score on a long rushing touchdown down the sideline (conversion, Gage Miller, rushing). After another defensive stand, Bryson Potter was able to find Crahen streaking behind the defense for their first touchdown connection of the season (conversion, Miller, rushing). The Stars would make a final defensive stand to end the half and keep the Tigers two scores back heading into the break. The Stars would turn to a ball control plan in the second half and cap their lone scoring drive with a touchdown pass to Redman on the opening play of the 4th quarter to take the score out to 22-0 (conversion failed). The Tigers would add a late score and conversion after the game had already been decided. The offensive line of Easton Banks, Corbin Eckert, Brayden Newman, Elijah Pastore, Levi Nelson and Spencer Worrell controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night. The defense was best defined as a total team effort with the entire unit playing well and rallying to the ball. Corbin Eckert had a particularly strong evening from his linebacker position, while Zane Rearden played well from the nose position. The secondary was highlighted by Gunner Shirley and TJ McKinney’s efforts in not allowing big plays over the top. All players had solid debuts and contributed in some way. The Stars return to action on Tuesday when the travel to Cascade. The 7th grade Stars were defeated by a score of 38-0. The young Stars will look to regroup as they head into next weeks contest vs. Cascade.
