Western Boone sent their varsity baseball team to former Sagamore conference rival Danville for a varsity baseball match up on Thursday evening. The Stars came away with a 4-2 victory to earn their sixth win in a row. Beau Sawyer started on the mound and had his absolute best stuff; Beau’s outing was by far his most dominant performance yet. Sawyer pitched 6 complete innings. Sawyer struck out 3 Warriors along the way allowing just one walk and scattering nine hits. Sawyer allowed two earned runs but held Danville scoreless the first six innings. The sophomore started the seventh inning, and the Warriors tried to rally by loading the bases. Owen Oakley was again called upon and again came up absolutely clutch for the Stars. With the bases loaded and no outs, it took Oakley just five pitches to end the game! Oakley forced a ground out double play on his first pitch and four pitches later rolled another ground ball to shortstop Layton Yancey to end the game! Western Boone’s defense was locked in all night and fully embraced the team’s pillar of fighting for each other. Seniors Owen Howe and Layton Yancey each recorded multiple outs playing middle infield. Quinn Westerfeld secured every out he could at first base. Mason Foster caught a tremendous game. Easton Nance was busy all night recording six outs from third base. The outfield play of Kahne Reid, Jack Mallory, and Kane Jackson was tremendous. Offensively the Stars had a great approach all night long, hunting fastballs and finding plenty of loud barrels. The loudest barrel of all came midway through the game when Layton Yancey launched a ball to Danville’s tennis courts for his first home run of the season! Quinn Westerfeld was seeing the ball well and while Danville’s outfield kept him off base early, in Quinn’s third at bat he nuked his third triple of the season. Beau Sawyer would plate Westerfeld a few minutes later with a sacrifice fly for an RBI after working a full count. Easton Nance provided two hits, one of which was a double which scored Westerfeld who had been walked as the pair executed a hit and run to perfection. Owen Howe, a senior, continued to lead by giving the Stars two hits of his own as well as an RBI. Kane Jackson is starting to look very comfortable at the plate in his freshman campaign and provided a hit of his own with a rip down the left field line. Zach Sprong is nightly demonstrating top level senior leadership by helping his team with his base running abilities. Western Boone is off Friday before ending the week by hosting Tri-West at home Saturday.
