The Mohawks hosted the Eastern Hancock Royals on Thursday. The Mohawks played a great match and came out on top with a victory. After two tight, tough losses earlier in the week, Coach challenged the team to get themselves a win for the week. All of the players played well and fought until the very end. Varsity Scores: 1 Singles - Harrison Fischer with a score of 8-3. Fischer faced the same opponent from last year at the 2 Singles position. This opponent is cool and collected, which challenged Fischer to keep calm himself and play the tennis game he wanted to. Once settled in after a few games, Fischer carried himself off to a victory. 2 Singles - Austin Lemmons with a score of 8-0. Lemmons did a great job reading his opponent and attacking his weaknesses. Coach applauded Lemmons for seeing that short balls were a weakness of this opponent. In response to Coach's remark, Lemmons said, "Hey, it kept working, so why would I change it?" Exactly. Marks of a smart tennis player developing. 3 Singles - Deegan Smith with a score of 6-8. Smith has a tendency to start the match out slow, usually getting down by a few games before settling in. But once settled in, Smith is able to play even with his opponents. That is what happened in this match. Smith start with an 0-5 deficit, but was able to play even a few games and get two games before a changeover. But sadly, it was just a little too late to capture a victory. 1 Doubles - Lucas Lemmons and Rex Fischer with a score of 8-3. Similar to the 1 Singles match, the 1 Doubles pairing of Lemmons and Fischer had to settle in a bit. But once they did, they easily took home the victory. Lemmons and Fischer have great teamwork out on the court and are currently undefeated for the season. 2 Doubles - Max Leising and Henry Nieman with a score of 8-5. This was the first true Varsity match for Nieman. This was also the debut of Leising and Nieman as a doubles pairing, and the energy on the 2 Doubles court was new and alive. There was great communication, teamwork, and energy on the court that Coach has been missing all season. It all worked in their favor, as they came away with an 8-5 win. JV Scores: 1 Singles - Kiefer Cockerham with a score of 1-6. Cockerham played at the same time as the other Varsity matches, which made it hard for Coach to watch. Cockerham has been trying to get his fire back, ever since playing a week plus worth of racket roulette to find him the best racket to make him successful. Glimpses of it come back, but he has been working so hard this season. 2 Singles - Hunter James with a score of 6-1. James doesn't get to play many singles matches, so this one was almost a treat for him, especially with a victory score of 6-1. James has been working incredibly hard to take his skills to the next level. 1 Doubles - Garrett Stocklin and Isaac Walker with a score of 6-3. Coach told the 4 JV players to figure out who was playing singles and who was playing doubles. Stocklin prefers doubles to singles, and so it was no surprise that he led this doubles team. Walker, as the team's sole 5th grader, is a great go-with-the-flow kid, who paired nicely with Stocklin. The pairing played a strong match against their opponents and had it pay off with a win. The Mohawks are back in action at home on Monday, as they host the East Central Trojans.
