The boys track team traveled to Delta on Thursday night for the sectional track meet against some of the best athletes in the state and while the season may have came to a close many of the boys had their best performances of the year including the boys 4x4 relay team breaking a 37 year old school record that was set by Tim Brewer, Larry Ehlers, Nathan Marsh and Glen Rose in 1987. Luis Nieto got things started in the 110mh and when he crossed the finish line he just missed out on his PR and placed 16th for the Indians. Nieto has been great for the team all season doing an event that not many are willing to try. In the 100m dash Colton Emrick lined up and ran his second best time of the season while crossing the finish line in 13th. Emrick just missed out on placing in the top eight in one of the most competitive events. Scott O'Connor was representing the Indians in the 1600m and racing many top runners from the state was able to run to a new PR by nine seconds and just missing out on a sub 6 minute mile placing 22nd. O'Connor took off 22 seconds from his time a year ago. In the 400m dash it was Alec Spence and Jackson Cowper lining up for the Indians. Going into the race Spence knew lane assignment is a factor and for the second year in a row he was placed in lane 8 and while it wasn't the finish he wanted he was able to run his third best race of the season and placed 8th. Cowper was in a different heat and had a perfect starting spot and he took it the opportunity and was able to run to a new PR and a 9th place finish. In the 300mh it was Luis Nieto running them for the third time this season and when he crossed the finish line he once again set a new PR and placed 18th. Conner Walser and Bradin Daniels were in the 800m run for the Indians and when they took off they were racing a one of the fastest 800m runs in the state with the top two runners ranked in the top 4 at the regional meet. Walser and Daniels ran a solid races and were side by side crossing the finish line. This time it was Walser finishing 9th and Daniels placing 10th. Colton Emrick and Jackson Cowper ran the 200m and Emrick ran his best race of the season and just missed his PR from a year ago. Emrick placed 12th and once again just missed out on a top 8 finish while Cowper also ran his second best time and just missed his PR placed 16th. To close out the night it was the boys 4x400 relay team of Alec Spence, Bradin Daniels, Jackson Cowper and Conner Walser lining up against the best in the area and they didn't disappoint. With Spence and Walser being so close to the school record of 3:33 a couple times the past three years they lined up with Daniels and Cowper one last time to give it a shot. With the relay teams season best being 3:38.23 it looked like it was going to take a miracle and some horsepower to make it happen. But what happen was all four runners gave it everything they had and left everything they had on the track and when they crossed the finish line they placed 4th with a time of 3:31.31. Nearly a seven second PR and a new school record. With the 4th place finish the boys hope to have a chance to represent Union City at the Regional meet next week but for now they have to wait and see until it is posted. In high jump it was Grant Elliott representing Union City and unfortunately for him he was out most of the week due to illness but managed to place 10th. Elliott on a healthy day would have had a shot at moving on to regional with the qualifying height being his PR this season. Grant has been a huge part of the team this year while doing high jump and know that next year will be an even better year. In Shot Put it was Michael Miller throwing in his last meet of his career and Kolton Mills and like they have all season both throwers finished close to each other and with the battle it was Mills placing 18th while Miller placed 20th. Miller has been great for the team and helping the younger throwers get better and we have all appreciated him all three years. In Discus it was Brayden Timmerman and Kolton Mills and just like just like the shot put both throwers were close to each other as they finished. Timmerman took 15th place with a new PR throw and with the throw was able to add 27 feet from his throw a year ago. Mills wasn't far behind throwing his second best throw of the season and placing 17th. Mills is another one that we are glad that decided to come out this year for both throwing events as well as running.
