Triton Athletics

High school sports are about much more than wins and losses, and South Bend Washington tennis coach Kevin Kirkland provided a memorable example during a match at Triton last week. After Triton freshman Galen Harms finished his match, Kirkland quietly asked him to step away from his teammates, who were watching from the bleachers. Kirkland told Harms that he was impressed by the attitude and effort he displayed throughout the match. Kirkland praised Harms for playing the sport the right way and being a joy to watch. He also recognized the freshman’s willingness to respectfully explain the score and why certain points were being played out so his opponent understood what was happening. The Washington coach then presented Harms with a gently used tennis racket that had been restrung and fitted with a new grip. Kirkland’s generosity and encouraging words created a special moment that Harms will remember for a lifetime. His act of kindness was a wonderful display of sportsmanship and an example of what high school athletics are truly about.
