GARY — Triton made the most of its opportunity to play at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday, using a big third inning and a dominant relief performance from Drew Bingamon to defeat Marquette Catholic, 7-3. After two scoreless innings, the Trojans broke the game open with five runs in the top of the third. Marquette Catholic answered with a run in the bottom half and added two more in the fourth, but Triton responded with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to stay in control. The Trojans finished with 10 hits, while holding the Blazers to just two. Braxton Kaufman, Max Johnson, Jadyn Prater and Trey Tarlton each collected two hits for Triton. Prater reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks, two stolen bases and a run scored. Kaufman helped himself at the plate with two hits, a run and an RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Maddox Dennie and Blake Ousley also drove in runs for the Trojans. Kaufman earned the win on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on one hit while striking out two. Bingamon shut the door in relief, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out eight without issuing a walk. For Marquette Catholic, Aleks Pecoski doubled and drove in two runs, while Aedan McKee added the Blazers’ other hit.
